Cherrey Cup

A Legacy of Midwestern Excellence.

The Cherrey Cup stands as the definitive symbol of championship for the Midwestern Conference of the Greater Ontario Hockey League. Named in honor of hockey pioneer Doug Cherrey, the trophy was awarded annually to the playoff champion of a division widely regarded as the most competitive in Junior B hockey. For nearly half a century, the road to the provincial championship ran through the “Midwest,” and no team navigated that path with more distinction than the Waterloo Siskins. With 10 Cherrey Cup titles to our name, including a historic run of dominance in the 1980s and a storied “worst-to-first” championship in 2019, the Siskins’ identity is permanently etched into the silver of this retired relic. Though the conference realigned in 2024, the Cherrey Cup remains the benchmark of excellence for generations of Siskins players and fans.

Who Was Doug Cherrey?

The trophy was named in honour of Doug Cherrey, a long-time resident of Elmira and a dedicated servant to Junior hockey in the Midwestern Ontario region. For decades, the “Cherrey Cup” was synonymous with the battle for Midwestern bragging rights.

Retirement of the Cherrey Cup

While the Cherrey Cup has been retired, the Siskins’ quest for hardware continues in the Western Conference as we now compete for the Joe Thornton Trophy.

Cherrey Cup Championship History

The Cherrey Cup was retired following the 2023-24 season as the Midwestern Conference of the GOHL was disbanded with the realignment into two conferences – the West and East.
