Sutherland Cup History.

Since its inception in 1934, the Sutherland Cup has stood as the ultimate prize in Ontario Hockey Association Junior ‘B’ hockey. It is more than just a trophy; it is the definitive symbol of provincial supremacy. Today, 23 elite teams across the Greater Ontario Hockey League (GOHL) battle every season for the honor of hoisting it.
In the storied history of this competition, no name carries more weight than the Waterloo Siskins. With a record-breaking 12 Sutherland Cup championships, the Siskins have defined excellence for generations—from our foundational first title in 1940 to our most recent provincial triumph in 2019. We don’t just compete for the Cup; we helped build its legacy.
The Man Behind the Silver: Captain James T. Sutherland

The Sutherland Cup is more than just a trophy; it is a monument to the “Father of Hockey in Ontario,” Captain James T. Sutherland. A military veteran and a visionary architect of the sport, Sutherland’s influence on the game is immeasurable. From serving as President of the OHA (1915) and the CAHA (1916) to revolutionizing the sport with preseason conditioning and strategic coaching systems, he built the very foundation of the modern game.
Perhaps his greatest legacy was born from his time in uniform. Upon his discharge from the army in 1919, Sutherland proposed a memorial for the young men who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Great War—a vision that became the Memorial Cup. Until his passing in 1955, he remained the fierce guardian of hockey’s heritage, famously championing his hometown of Kingston as the birthplace of the organized game.
As the namesake of our league’s highest honor, Captain Sutherland represents the grit, discipline, and historical preservation that the Waterloo Siskins have championed since 1934. Today, when a Siskin lifts the Sutherland Cup, they aren’t just celebrating a season—they are joining a 90-year lineage of excellence established by the man who dedicated his life to Canada’s game.
