In the world of Junior Hockey, the action on the ice gets the spotlight, but the real “unsung heroes” are the ones who open their doors and hearts to

our players. Today, the Waterloo Siskins organization would like to extend a massive thank you to Steph Cullen, Eric Kessel, and their son McKenzie.
Being a billet family is no small feat—it requires patience, extra trips to the grocery store, and the ability to turn a house into a home for young athletes chasing their dreams. This season, the Cullen-Kessel family went above and beyond, providing a “home base” for five different Siskins at various points throughout the year:
-
Ulysses Lombardi
-
Isaiah Perrotte
-
Jackson Halloran
-
Anton Smirnov
-
Mason Wharton
Whether it was a long-term stay or a transitional landing spot, Steph, Eric, and McKenzie provided the stability and support these players needed to focus on their performance on the ice and their growth as young men off of it.
More Than Just a Bed
Billeting is about more than just a spare room; it’s about inclusion. From shared meals to post-game debriefs, the Cullen-Kessel family has become an integral part of our team’s support system. McKenzie, thank you for sharing your home and your parents with these “big brothers” this season!
The Siskins success is built on the strength of our community, and families like yours are the foundation. On behalf of the players, the coaching staff, and the entire front office: Thank you, Steph, Eric, and McKenzie!
Could Your Family Be the Next “Home Away From Home?”
Our program relies on the generosity and spirit of local families to help our players succeed. If you have extra space in your home and a passion for supporting young athletes, we want to hear from you!
Being a billet parent is a rewarding experience that often leads to lifelong friendships. Help us continue the Siskins tradition by joining our hosting team for the upcoming season.
