Ben Oliver; 2024-25 Captain

Ben Oliver, captain of the Kitchener-Waterloo Siskins, is more than just a goal-scoring forward – he’s a team player whose focus is on leading with skill and drive. Now in his fourth year with the league, Oliver has developed a reputation not just for his skills on the ice but for his commitment to building a strong team culture.

Reflecting on his new head coach, Matt Doyle, Oliver speaks with respect and admiration. “He’s had a lot of success as a coach. It’s a great style of team play he runs, as he’s really focused on getting the most out of his players,” he shares. Doyle’s approach has brought fresh energy to the team, and Oliver appreciates the focus on player growth and resilience.

“Always be there for your teammates. Build confidence in them – that’s a big part of being a captain”

As a player, Oliver’s play style is defined by speed and agility. “I’m a speedy, agile forward who can play hard in the corners and can stick up for my teammates when need be,” he explains. Over the years, he’s grown into a versatile forward who balances goal-scoring with a gritty, physical game, bringing an edge to every shift he plays.

There are certain games that Oliver looks forward to each season. Rivalries with teams like the Cambridge Redhawks and Ayr Centennials hit close to home, especially after the Siskins were knocked out by Ayr in the first round a year ago. “Those games have a different intensity – they get everyone fired up,” he admits. These matchups are personal, fueling Oliver and his teammates to push even harder.

When asked about his leadership style, Oliver describes himself as a players’ player. “I try to keep a good environment inside the dressing room, to get the most out of everybody,” he says.  His approach is all about creating a comfortable, open atmosphere where each player feels valued and supported. “I love the fans, too, and I’ve gotten to know them really well. They’re part of this journey with us.”

Oliver’s goals for this season extend beyond his own performance; he’s focused on building team chemistry and making a deep run toward the Sutherland Cup. “We’re building something here. We go to war for each other, and we don’t back down,” he says. This dedication to team success underscores the strong bond he’s cultivated with his teammates.

Pre-game rituals and superstitions help Oliver get in the zone. From eating the same food to following the same warm-up, these routines keep him grounded. “It’s all about resetting mentally and staying relaxed,” he shares. This consistent preparation has become an essential part of his game-day routine.

For younger players looking to take on leadership roles, Oliver offers simple yet powerful advice: “Always be there for your teammates. Build confidence in them—that’s a big part of being a captain.”  His approach emphasizes the importance of lifting others up, fostering an environment where every player feels they belong and can succeed.

Looking at his own game, Oliver identifies consistency in the defensive zone as an area for improvement. “I always strive to be better than the season before,” he says, underscoring his commitment to continuous growth.

Oliver knows that leadership isn’t a solo effort. Players like Evan Klein, Nolan Macey, and Ty McHutchion, help keep things light-hearted during stressful times, bringing humour and support to the dressing room. “We’ve all been here a while, and we strive to make everyone feel comfortable,” he says, grateful for the camaraderie within the team.

Ben Oliver’s journey with the Siskins is about more than personal accolades; it’s about changing a culture and pushing the team to greater heights. With a blend of skill, leadership, and a genuine love for the game, he’s setting the stage for a memorable season—one where the Siskins hope to come out on top, united and unbreakable.
